Hello Everyone! The Virtual Forum is approaching. We would love 1 volunteer from the community for the Forum Selection Committee. Ideally, the volunteer would already be serving in some capacity in a governance role for your project. In addition to calling for volunteers for the Forum selection committee, this email kicks off the brainstorming period before the CFP tool opens for formal Forum submissions. The categories for brainstorming etherpads have already been setup here[1]. Please add your etherpads and ideas there! The CFP tool will open on August 31st and will close September 14th. Today, Red Hat is providing $551.9 million USD<https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/red-hat-and-boston-universit…> in software subscriptions and resources to the Hariri Institute’s<https://www.bu.edu/hic/> open research cloud initiative,<https://www.bu.edu/hic/centers-initiatives-labs/orci/> in addition to $20 million to support research and deepen collaboration under the Red Hat Collaboratory at Boston University. This effort is creating a production research cloud that serves as the first, founding region in the OpenInfra Labs<http://openinfralabs.org/> Cloud Network, which is envisioned to be a network of production clouds connecting open source projects to production. Pause for democracy: Leaving open source storage to help Americans vote in 2020<http://www.bu.edu/rhcollab/2021/04/08/colloquium-pause-for-democracy-leavin…> Sage Weil Ceph Project Lead; Sr Distinguished Engineer, Red Hat Thursday April 29, 2021 2:00 - 3:00 PM Location: Zoom Meeting ID: 924 4393 8387 Passcode: 770902 Abstract In 2020 I took a leave of absence to work on democracy and voting related efforts with VoteAmerica, a national get-out-the-vote organization with a focus on voter registration, voter turnout, and voter protection. This was a huge departure from my usual role at Red Hat leading Ceph, an open source distributed storage project, both in terms of the technical work and the underlying motivation and purpose. This talk will cover a mix of both what I did and why, as well as how the journey has changed the way I view my work and career goals going forward. I will talk about what drove me to take what seemed at the time like a drastic move, how I (eventually) found a place where I felt I could be effective, who I worked with and what we accomplished, and how that has changed my perspective now that I have returned to my “real” job. About the Speaker Sage Weil is the lead architect and co-creator of the Ceph open source distributed storage system. Sage helped design Ceph as part of his PhD research at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since finishing in 2007, he has continued to refine Ceph with the goal of providing a stable next generation distributed storage system for Linux. Sage co-founded Inktank in 2012 to bring enterprise-quality open source storage to the enterprise. After Red Hat acquired Inktank in 2014, Sage has worked in Red Hat's Office of the CTO to improve Ceph and help shape Red Hat's overall storage strategy. About the Collaboratory A partnership between Red Hat and Boston University, the Red Hat Collaboratory connects BU faculty and students with industry practitioners working in open-source software communities. Updated Homepage Design Proposal

Hi OpenInfra Labs! We have been discussing some options to help showcase the upcoming April 27th keynote which will feature Chris Wright of Red Hat directly promoting openinfralabs.org. In an effort to help new site visitors better understand what OpenInfra Labs is, we're suggesting a new diagram (thanks to Michael for the rough draft) as well as a place to prominently promote the video and announcement. The design for reference [1] and many thanks to James Cole, our lead designer, for putting this together. In the future, the video/announcement space could be used to promote presentations/talks around OpenInfra Labs along with general community news. vPTG April 2021 Team Signup

Greetings! As you hopefully already know, our next PTG will be virtual again, and held from Monday, April 19 to Friday, April 23. We will have the same schedule set up available as last time with three windows of time spread across the day to cover all timezones with breaks in between. *To signup your team, you must complete **BOTH** the survey[1] AND reserve time in the ethercalc[2] by March 25 at 7:00 UTC.* We ask that the PTL/SIG Chair/Team lead sign up for time to have their discussions in with 4 rules/guidelines. 1. Cross project discussions (like SIGs or support project teams) should be scheduled towards the start of the week so that any discussions that might shape those of other teams happen first. 2. No team should sign up for more than 4 hours per UTC day to help keep participants actively engaged. 3. No team should sign up for more than 16 hours across all time slots to avoid burning out our contributors and to enable participation in multiple teams discussions. Again, you need to fill out BOTH the ethercalc AND the survey to complete your team's sign up. If you have any issues with signing up your team, due to conflict or otherwise, please let me know! While we are trying to empower you to make your own decisions as to when you meet and for how long (after all, you know your needs and teams timezones better than we do), we are here to help! Once your team is signed up, please register! And remind your team to register! Registration is free, but since it will be how we contact you with passwords, event details, etc. it is still important!
