We started our discussion today with revisiting the container orchestration topic that a few of the working group members brought up last week. With listing the various groups in the CNCF ecosystem, just as a starting point, we quickly stumbled over to talk about the edge computing landscape. The attendees on today?s weekly call shared the desire to have a central place where you can discover what projects exist in the open source and standards space to address edge needs and challenges. While the group understands the challenges of keeping the information up to date, we still prefer to maintain a list so we can always look up information as a starting point, even if it turns out to be in need of an update! The group decided to use our already existing wiki page where we started to collect the adjacent groups and communities that we work with, and just extend that list to serve multiple purposes at the same time: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Edge_Computing_Group/Adjacent_Edge_Projects The most recent Project Teams Gathering (PTG) event concluded just over a month ago. If you would like to catch up on the edge discussions you can now read the first article of a 3-piece series that got published today. The series will guide you through the conversations about the journey to take and run your edge use case in production: https://superuser.openstack.org/articles/what-does-it-take-to-bring-and-operate-your-edge-in-production-day-0/ For further details about the weekly calls, please see our wiki: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Edge_Computing_Group See you next Monday (May 16)! As it is also the week of KubeCon EU I couldn?t find anyone who would facilitate the call and therefore I need to cancel it. __Our next call is on May 23!__ For further details about the weekly calls, please see our wiki: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Edge_Computing_Group Thanks and Best Regards, Ildik? ??? I am willing to do the presentation on Edge complexity myself, but if anyone on this list will be attending the conference and would like to share the responsibilities, I welcome the opportunity. Here is the topic: Wed, June 8, 4:00pm - 4:30pm | Berlin Congress Center - B - B09 Complexity at the Edge ? A knotty problem 5G, NFV & Edge Edge computing has been part of the emerging technology landscape for over five years now, yet somehow, it remains somewhat of a mystery (or possibly just a Byzantine maze) to many users. Like Cloud computing before, Edge was touted as being able to simplify complex use cases. In reality, Edge has only magnified the essential complexity of the cloud by highlighting the need for better security, development, deployment and management tools that work over a highly distributed network environment. Using real world examples and painful lessons learned -- what do mean we will have to take the system, which is serving as the sole network connection for hundreds of branch offices, down for 2 hours to upgrade the hypervisor? -- We will explore how the principles of simplicity and ease of management collide with the inherent complexity of managing Edge architectures, with some possible ways that Open Source tools and techniques can address these issues. -- -- *Beth Cohen* SDN Network Product Strategy Verizon Business Group M 781.434.8553 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
