From marc.jeanmougin at telecom-paris.fr Mon Apr 11 16:34:36 2022 From: marc.jeanmougin at telecom-paris.fr (Marc Jeanmougin) Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2022 18:34:36 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [Floss-mooc] MOOC title/subtitle Message-ID: <765445496.5810736.1649694876197.JavaMail.zimbra@enst.fr> Hi all, We need a decision on the MOOC title, and I'd like to initiate a discussion first, so I'll put here my thoughts on the matter. The main candidates for the course title for now are a combination of FLOSS | Open source | Free software | Upstream(ing) + University | Masterclass . In that sense, there is a tradeoff between the practical (code-focused) contents of the course, the aspects of foreseeable reception or engagement by the community/communities (perception of the term "Open source" vs "Free software" or "FLOSS"), and of course the popularity of those terms in the student audience = how likely people will "get" what the course is about from the title, without prior knowledge of the subject. Hence, IMO the best tradeoff is to use "open source" in the title ("open source masterclass" does sound nice) and use the subtitle to precise something like "Contributing code to upstream free/libre/opensource projects", but I'd be happy to hear your thoughts about it Thanks! -- Marc (issue link : https://gitlab.com/mooc-floss/mooc-floss/-/issues/54 ) From xavier at opencraft.com Tue Apr 12 10:40:04 2022 From: xavier at opencraft.com (Xavier Antoviaque) Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2022 11:40:04 +0100 Subject: [Floss-mooc] MOOC title/subtitle In-Reply-To: <765445496.5810736.1649694876197.JavaMail.zimbra@enst.fr> References: <765445496.5810736.1649694876197.JavaMail.zimbra@enst.fr> Message-ID: That sounds perfect to me! Short and practical, says what it is clearly, and still takes care of being inclusive in the naming through the subtitle. +1 from me! And thanks for tackling this -- choosing a name is always one of the trickiest steps :) I'm looping in Ali & Jill btw, who participated in the discussion on https://gitlab.com/mooc-floss/mooc-floss/-/issues/54 but isn't on the mailing list (let me know if you'd like to be added btw - it's very low traffic, 1-2 mails/month).
