Hi,
Thank you all who made it to the Edge Computing Group's PTG session, which was held at the time of the weekly call on October 23.
Below please find a quick recap of our conversation at the event:
- Main discussion topic: Revisiting the scope and activities of the working group, with the goal of adjusting them to what the participants and target audience of the group need and want today
- Scope
* Feedback ~ The group’s current scope felt too broad to the session attendees ~ People’s focus and activities shifted since the WG was started, and therefore they feel less aligned with the group’s current scope ~ Infrastructure is treated differently, and is often invisible. But, this should not mean that we completely shift the focus off of it
- Brainstorming
* DevOps is currently very popular and affects how infrastructure is viewed and treated. —> What is DevOps in the edge and distributed infrastructure context? * IT vs OT, and having more focus on operations * App developers do not have knowledge about the underlying network and infrastructure, but the apps currently still need to be network aware. —> How to help with bridging the gap?
- New scope and goals
* The attendees agreed to stay in the infrastructure space -> edge as general-purpose infrastructure. And look into the DevOps space.
* Actions - Define Edge DevOps - Produce educational materials and operator tips in the above areas
- Next steps
* The group needs to define scope and plans to attract a new audience. Use cases and industries in mind include: ~ Banks ~ Retail with digital displays ~ Quick service restaurants
* People and roles ~ Infrastructure operators ~ People writing code and creating automation tools for infrastructure
We also touched on looking into moving the weekly call into a time slot that works for more people. I will be sending out a Doodle poll to find a new slot in a separate email, please keep an eye out for that.
Please feel free to add and correct anything I might’ve missed in the above summary.
Thanks and Best Regards, Ildikó
