OpenInfra Labs pilot project archival

OpenInfra Labs was launched as a pilot project, supported by the OpenInfra Foundation, almost 4 years ago. The project provided a home for projects in areas such as AI, telemetry, and more, and activities that contributed to advance research and collaboration in these areas. OpenInfra Labs was created during challenging times, with a global pandemic unfolding and limiting efficient collaboration around the globe, and this phenomenon made it very hard for the pilot project to reach its full potential. At the same time, newly forming research efforts and organizations started to overtake some of the activities previously performed in OpenInfra Labs. These factors contributed to OpenInfra Labs reaching the end of its lifecycle. In line with the above, OpenInfra Labs is now archived as an OpenInfra pilot project. As part of this process, this mailing list will also be deactivated, but archives will remain available. Other public resources and artifacts of the pilot project will also remain available for future reference. Hello Everyone! The next PTG on the calendar will be our usual virtual format and it will take place March 27 -31. The project signup survey is already ready to go! If your team is interested in participating, sign them up here[1]! Registration is also open now[2] We have also heard many requests from the contributor community to bring back in person events and also heard that with global travel reduction, it would be better travel wise for the community at large to combine it with the OpenInfra Summit[3]. So, an in-person PTG will take place Wednesday and Thursday! June 14 -15th. OpenInfra Summit registration will be required to participate, and contributor pricing and travel support[4] will be available. We will also be planning another virtual PTG in the latter half of the year. The exact date is still being finalized. This will give you three opportunities to get your team together in 2023: two virtual and one in-person. - Virtual: March 27-31 - In- Person: June 14-15 collocated with the OpenInfra Summit - Virtual: TBD, but second half of the year As any project in our community, you are free to take advantage of all or some of the PTGs this coming year. Rebuilding the core discussion

Greetings everyone, During our recent Open Infrastructure Summit in Berlin, one of the repeated discussion topics I found myself engaged in suggested a breakdown in shared context and communication within OpenInfra Labs. A bit of a root cause analysis occurred, and each discussion quickly determined there is definitely no fault, but more a result of the state of engagement which collided against the pandemic. Further compounded by the time schedule differences which run our various lives and efforts. It did not help us that we did not use the same words to begin with. A few of us have continued going back and forth over the last few weeks and we've reached the conclusion we need to rebuild the core consensus and discussion. Ultimately a revision of our mission and long term vision, in order to better support the sharing of knowledge and context which is fundamentally needed to support the efforts occurring within OpenInfra Labs. Before we really continue onward in these discussions, I think it is important for us to widen the audience of engagement and enable a greater chorus of voices to engage as we sort of press the reset button in order to set expectations, intents, and bring us all back to a happier, engaged place. In recognition that no single tool or means will work for everyone, *and* to help provide insight for those that don't necessarily subscribe to mailing lists or whom are unable to join our discussions now, the idea has been floated to write about it. Such as a blog or a journal. To share our story. To share the stories. To spread the knowledge! I think we should start with high bandwidth calls to reach the same page, and then move forward from there. If you're interested in engaging in this discussion, please reply with to this email with the days of the week and times that would work, or that would not work, and I'll try to find a mutually agreeable 30 minute window every two weeks for us to start with. Hello Everyone, I wanted to provide an update on the October Project Teams Gathering (PTG). After discussing with community members and prospective sponsors, we have made the decision to pivot the event to 100% virtual to be as inclusive as possible. I know that this is not the ideal outcome and there are a lot of factors contributing to this decision, but we think it’s the best decision for the global community at this time. We are continuing to receive feedback on the value and importance of in-person PTGs; we just need to wait for other factors to be less of an obstacle If you have already registered, you should have been contacted for a full refund. We are going to use the same week for a virtual PTG and it will be free to attend, just like the previous ones. The registration is already live [1]. We are very excited to announce our first in-person Project Teams Gathering (PTG) since Shanghai in 2019! Can’t wait to get everyone back together again this October 17-20th at the Hyatt Regency in lovely Columbus, Ohio. The venue is located in the heart of downtown, within walking distance of local sports arenas and the Short North Arts District that hosts dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, art galleries and shops. Telemetry WG is now the Op1st Telemetry SIG

PTG April 2022 Team Signup

Hello! Last week, we announced the next virtual PTG will be held virtually from Monday, April 4th to Friday, April 8th, 2022. We will have the same schedule set up available as last time with three windows of time spread across the day to cover all timezones with breaks in between. To signup your team, you must complete BOTH the survey[1] AND reserve time in the ethercalc[2] by end of day March 11th. We ask that the PTL/SIG Chair/Team lead sign up for time to have their discussions with 3 rules/guidelines: 1. Cross project discussions (like SIGs or support project teams) should be scheduled towards the start of the week so that any discussions that might shape those of other teams happen first. 2. No team should sign up for more than 4 hours per UTC day to help keep participants actively engaged. 3. No team should sign up for more than 16 hours across all time slots to avoid burning out our contributors and to enable participation in multiple teams discussions. Again, you need to fill out BOTH the ethercalc AND the survey to complete your team's sign up. If you have any issues with signing up your team, due to conflict or otherwise, please let me know! While we are trying to empower you to make your own decisions as to when you meet and for how long (after all, you know your needs and teams timezones better than we do), we are here to help! Thank you to those who responded to the Doodle for our meeting time. The day and time selected was Friday at 15:00 UTC so we will move to that in February with our first meeting being on 2/4. As usual, should we need to cancel the first Friday of the month we have the backup date of the third week. Should we end up having to do that too frequently ,as Fridays are popular for holidays and vacations, we'll readdress the meeting time again. Hi everyone, The Diversity and Inclusion WG is holding a poll to see if there would be interest in attending if it were on another day and time as well as if IRC vs Video would be preferred. We currently meet the first Monday of the month at 17:00 UTC. And hope to have a planning meeting as our first meeting of the year. Our first meeting of the new year is slated for January 3rd at 17:00 UTC and for IRC. We will take the poll results into consideration and may cancel the January meeting to allow folks to plan on attending in which case February's meeting would be the first of the year. Project Caerus Update

Dear all, I would like to take this opportunity to give you another update on Project Caerus. As you may remember, the project develops techniques such as near-data processing and semantic caching to optimize the performance of disaggregated data lakes. On the front of near data processing, we have implemented the pushdown of a wide range of SQL operators from a Spark cluster to a storage cluster that deploys either HDFS (CSV format) or S3. Our evaluation using TCPH has shown significant improvements in application latency, network I/O and compute-side CPU time. On the front of semantic cache, which explores opportune caching of a variety of data and metadata, we have the core functionality working, with 4x-5x improvement in execution time and CPU time. PTG October 2021 Team Signup

Hi everyone, Last week, we announced the next PTG will held virtually from Monday, October 18 to Friday, October 22, 2021. We will have the same schedule set up available as last time with three windows of time spread across the day to cover all timezones with breaks in between. To signup your team, you must complete BOTH the survey[1] AND reserve time in the ethercalc[2] by end of day July 21. We ask that the PTL/SIG Chair/Team lead sign up for time to have their discussions with 3 rules/guidelines: 1. Cross project discussions (like SIGs or support project teams) should be scheduled towards the start of the week so that any discussions that might shape those of other teams happen first. 2. No team should sign up for more than 4 hours per UTC day to help keep participants actively engaged. 3. No team should sign up for more than 16 hours across all time slots to avoid burning out our contributors and to enable participation in multiple teams discussions. Again, you need to fill out BOTH the ethercalc AND the survey to complete your team's sign up. If you have any issues with signing up your team, due to conflict or otherwise, please let me know! While we are trying to empower you to make your own decisions as to when you meet and for how long (after all, you know your needs and teams timezones better than we do), we are here to help! OpenDev IRC services are moving to OFTC this weekend

As a majority of our constituent projects have voiced a preference for enacting our long-standing evacuation plan, the OpenDev Collaboratory's IRC service bots will be switching from Freenode to the OFTC network this weekend (May 29-30, 2021). We understand this is short notice, but multiple projects have requested that we act quickly. Please expect some gaps in channel logging and notifications from our various bots over the course of the weekend. Project Caerus Code Release

Dear all, As you may know, the Caerus project of the Open Infra Labs investigates techniques such as near-data processing and semantic caching to optimize the performance of disaggregated data lakes. I am pleased to announce that an initial version of the project code is now available in the open infra lab repo (https://github.com/open-infrastructure-labs/caerus) The initial code base enables the pushing down of Spark SQL operations to the data nodes of HDFS. Attached is a preliminary evaluation of the work using TPCH benchmark. You are all welcome to check out and, better yet, contribute to the work. This effort is creating a production research cloud that serves as the first, founding region in the OpenInfra Labs<http://openinfralabs.org/> Cloud Network, which is envisioned to be a network of production clouds connecting open source projects to production. This was a huge departure from my usual role at Red Hat leading Ceph, an open source distributed storage project, both in terms of the technical work and the underlying motivation and purpose. This talk will cover a mix of both what I did and why, as well as how the journey has changed the way I view my work and career goals going forward. I will talk about what drove me to take what seemed at the time like a drastic move, how I (eventually) found a place where I felt I could be effective, who I worked with and what we accomplished, and how that has changed my perspective now that I have returned to my “real” job. About the Speaker Sage Weil is the lead architect and co-creator of the Ceph open source distributed storage system. Sage helped design Ceph as part of his PhD research at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since finishing in 2007, he has continued to refine Ceph with the goal of providing a stable next generation distributed storage system for Linux. Sage co-founded Inktank in 2012 to bring enterprise-quality open source storage to the enterprise. After Red Hat acquired Inktank in 2014, Sage has worked in Red Hat's Office of the CTO to improve Ceph and help shape Red Hat's overall storage strategy. Hi OpenInfra Labs! We have been discussing some options to help showcase the upcoming April 27th keynote which will feature Chris Wright of Red Hat directly promoting openinfralabs.org. In an effort to help new site visitors better understand what OpenInfra Labs is, we're suggesting a new diagram (thanks to Michael for the rough draft) as well as a place to prominently promote the video and announcement. The design for reference [1] and many thanks to James Cole, our lead designer, for putting this together. In the future, the video/announcement space could be used to promote presentations/talks around OpenInfra Labs along with general community news. Greetings! As you hopefully already know, our next PTG will be virtual again, and held from Monday, April 19 to Friday, April 23. We will have the same schedule set up available as last time with three windows of time spread across the day to cover all timezones with breaks in between. *To signup your team, you must complete **BOTH** the survey[1] AND reserve time in the ethercalc[2] by March 25 at 7:00 UTC.* We ask that the PTL/SIG Chair/Team lead sign up for time to have their discussions in with 4 rules/guidelines. 1. Cross project discussions (like SIGs or support project teams) should be scheduled towards the start of the week so that any discussions that might shape those of other teams happen first. 2. No team should sign up for more than 4 hours per UTC day to help keep participants actively engaged. 3. No team should sign up for more than 16 hours across all time slots to avoid burning out our contributors and to enable participation in multiple teams discussions. Again, you need to fill out BOTH the ethercalc AND the survey to complete your team's sign up. If you have any issues with signing up your team, due to conflict or otherwise, please let me know! 2020 Open Infrastructure Foundation Annual Report

Despite being a very different year than most, the Open Infrastructure community, which has over 110,000 community members, made it a productive and successful year. One of the biggest milestones that happened in the global community last year was that OpenStack, one of the top three most active open source projects with 15 million cores in production, marked its 10th anniversary in 2020. The Open Infrastructure Foundation would like to extend a huge thanks to the global community for all of the work that went into 2020 and is continuing in 2021 to help people build and operate open infrastructure. Proposal: Relocating Open Infra Labs from Gitlab to Github

I wanted to have a discussion about relocating our gitlab content to github so that we may better track MOC and OI Labs work on a single project board. Problem Description Historically the Mass Open Cloud repositories have existed github as have the Harvard and BU repositories being used for the NERC. In addition, other team's working on related projects have voiced a preference for github. This creates friction for the dev team's because Open Infra Labs was set up in gitlab and it is, for example, difficult to track the work on a single project board. We have been tracking the details in this ticket: https://github.com/CCI-MOC/ops-issues/issues/39 Proposed solution including issues which need to be resolved We propose relocating open infra labs gitlab content to an Openinfralabs github location. Assuming we move forward we would like to do so before more processes become baked into our use of gitlab. Known issues/steps: • confirm web site may be driven from github and schedule migration • moving content over • import issues - bring over discussions • redirect repositories to github • update openinfralabs web site with links Alternatives & History Some history – initially we created the repository in the opendev and migrated to git in response to feedback from various operators. We chose gitlab at the time because of the perception it is more open then github. Other options: 1. Continue with current state – keeping OpenInfra Labs on gitlab. 2. Migrate MOC/NERC etc. to gitlab. This would be difficult both because of the size of existing repositories, need for retraining and the number of processes already built around the github model. 3. Revisit opendev – at this time it does not address the ease of access issues initially raised by operators. I will summarize this note in irc and point to both the ticket and this email. Thanks! As you may know, the Open Cloud Workshop<https://massopen.cloud/events/2020-open-cloud-workshop/> (formerly Mass Open Cloud Workshop) held in March kicked off a shift to a focus broader than the MOC - a constellation of related projects<https://massopen.cloud/2020-open-cloud-workshop-follow-up-opportunities-to-…> we’ve started to call the Open Cloud Initiative. Coming out of the Workshop, we established a monthly meeting of representatives from each of the efforts. During these monthly discussions, questions on telemetry became a theme which would be a good area of focus for a working group. We identified two potential leads, Raja Sambasivan, Assistant Professor, Computer Science, Tufts University, and Marcel Hild, Engineering Manager, AI CoE, CTO Office Kiel Area, Red Hat, both of whom accepted our request to lead this working group (Thanks Raja and Marcel!). Introducing the Open Infrastructure Foundation

Hi everyone, If you’re not watching the Open Infrastructure Summit keynotes right now, you just missed some big news (and it’s not too late to tune in! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNNOFfDBB0o ). Jonathan Bryce just announced the Open Infrastructure Foundation (OIF) https://openinfra.dev/ as the successor to the OpenStack Foundation (OSF). The name change reflects all of our community’s work building open infrastructure with dozens of open source components, and we could not have done it without your help. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with you over the next decade to build open source communities that write software for production. The Summit keynotes are still going, so jump on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNNOFfDBB0o now to hear more about this announcement and how OpenInfra Labs and other open source projects fit into the next decade of open infrastructure. Your Virtual PTG Checklist

REGISTRATION If you haven't done so, please register for the PTG! This is how we will be able to provide you with the tooling information and passwords. IRC The main form of synchronous communication between attendees during the PTG is on IRC. If you are not on IRC, learn how to get started here [3]. The main PTG IRC channel is #openstack-ptg on Freenode. It's used to interact with the PTGbot, and Foundation staff will be present to help answer questions. PTGBOT The PTGbot [3] is an open source tool that PTG track moderators use to surface what's currently happening at the event. Track moderators will send messages to the bot via IRC, and from that information, the bot publishes a webpage with several sections of information: - The discussion topics currently discussed in the room ("now") - An indicative set of discussion topics coming up next ("next") - The schedule for the day with available extra slots you can book Learn more about the ptgbot via the documentation here [4]. HELP DESK We are here to help! If you have any questions during the event week, we encourage you to join the #openstack-ptg IRC channel and ask them there. You can ping Kendall Waters (wendallkaters) and Kendall Nelson(diablo_rojo) directly on IRC. We will also have a dedicated Zoom room, but ONLY FOR MONDAY, October 26 where an OSF staff member will be available to answer your event related questions. OpenInfra Labs 101 Overview Session - Open Infrastructure Summit

Hi OpenInfra Labs Community! At the Open Infrastructure Summit (October 19-23) <https://www.openstack.org/summit/2020/> we are inviting all of the OSF supported project communities to present a 101 session to provide an overview of what the project is and how folks can get involved. This would be a great opportunity to promote OpenInfra Labs and something we can feature on the new website, as well. I have included more information below about the logistics of the session. Is anyone available to help pull together and present this content? Two people is an option as well if anyone wants to tag-team. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, Allison — This session can be up to 25 minutes long, but we think around 15 minutes will be the most digestible for viewers. If the presenter or someone else from the OpenInfra Labs community is able to be online when the recording shows, we recommend utilizing the remainder of the time for Q&A with attendees in the virtual event platform chat for your session (for a total time of 30 minutes). Please read through slides 1-6 <file:///Users/ashleeferguson/Downloads/FNTECH%20Speaker%20Support%20Guide_091120.pdf> before you begin recording. We recommend using Zoom if possible. For the OpenInfra Labs Overview content, we’re hoping for it to be relatively beginner oriented. OpenInfra Labs PTG topics - no meeting Wednesday the 16th

No meeting on Sep 16th - I had meant to do ½ hour on what PTG things we may want to participate in or host, then decided that is a meeting that could be an email and so, that’s what this is. So, what’s a PTG - https://www.openstack.org/ptg/ What Openinfralabs projects want to have meetings that will allow overlap with other project team's who will be in attendance. Some that come to mind: 1. Invite folks from the XSEDE or other projects that we want to connect to for NERC 2. Overlap with different SIGs – eg. Scientific SIG and Cloud Research SIG – @Stig Telfer<mailto:stig@stackhpc.com> – do you have anything scheduled we should participate in? 3. ESI meet with Ironic team or others (this may already be setting up independently) 4. Project Caerus discussion (I’ll reach out to that separate working group) 5. Telemetry working group – not sure they’ll be organized yet 6. Operate First? 7. Other Stuff? Respond via email with other topics and I’ll send out a survey so we may pick a few. Thanks! 2020 Virtual Summit: Forum Submissions Now Accepted

Hello Everyone! We are now accepting Forum [1] submissions for the 2020 Virtual Open Infrastructure Summit [2]. Please submit your ideas through the Summit CFP tool [3] through September 14th. Don't forget to put your brainstorming etherpad up on the Forum page [4]. This is not a classic conference track with speakers and presentations. OSF community members (participants in development teams, operators, working groups, SIGs, and other interested individuals) discuss the topics they want to cover and get alignment on and we welcome your participation.
