vPTG October 2020 Team Signup Reminder

Hello Everyone! Wanted to give you all a reminder that the deadline for signing up teams for the PTG is approaching! The virtual PTG will be held from Monday October 26th to Friday October 30th, 2020. To signup your team, you must complete BOTH the survey[1] AND reserve time in the ethercalc[2] by September 11th at 7:00 UTC. We ask that the PTL/SIG Chair/Team lead sign up for time to have their discussions in with 4 rules/guidelines. 1. Cross project discussions (like SIGs or support project teams) should be scheduled towards the start of the week so that any discussions that might shape those of other teams happen first. 2. No team should sign up for more than 4 hours per UTC day to help keep participants actively engaged. 3. No team should sign up for more than 16 hours across all time slots to avoid burning out our contributors and to enable participation in multiple teams discussions. Once your team is signed up, please register[3]! And remind your team to register! Registration is free, but since it will be how we contact you with passwords, event details, etc. it is still important! Project Caerus Kickoff

Caerus is an open-source project hosted within Open Infra Labs that aims to optimize the performance of analytics engines, such as Spark and Tensorflow, by enhancing the interactions between analytics engines and disaggregated data stores like S3 and Ceph. You can find the project manifesto at: https://gitlab.com/open-infrastructure-labs/caerus/-/blob/master/Manifesto.…. Envisioned as a project with a close relationship between academic research and the software being developed, project Caerus aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice. An initial discussion with a group of researchers is scheduled for Wednesday October 26th between 2 and 5pm in Boston ( 6:00 PM to 9 PM GMT). All are welcome, particularly if you have requirements for this project or are interested in helping out. Please reply to me (msd(a)bu.edu) with the word ATTEND (all caps) at the top of the email and I will forward a calendar invite. This will allow us to plan for the attendance. Hello OpenInfra Labs community, Since you recently settled on a new logo and color scheme, we wanted to update openinfralabs.org with a new layout/design. This should a) match your current brand and b) be a bit more flexible for expansion moving forward. You can preview the website here[1]. This is on a branch on gitlab [2] and I can create a pull request, assuming we get community buy-in. That's where you come in! Please have a look at the site and let us know if there is anything weird, wonky, missing. I'll note some changes below: - New navigation - allows for additional growth of pages/sections - Blog tool is now integrated, though hidden, should someone desire to blog - New Supporters page - this is a more prominent way to showcase supporters, as well as add additional sponsorship info in the future - New Community page - A one-stop shop for all community activities -- Community First Manifesto - removed from top nav, but added to Community page - Upgrades to Gatsby plugins Please have a look and let me know your thoughts. Hello Everyone! We wanted to get your input on the best dates for holding the PTG now that its been annouced that the Summit itself will be virtual[1]. Please fill out the CIVS poll by August 3 at 15:00 UTC. We really appreciate your feedback! It will adopt a holistic approach to the development and operations of production AI systems, facilitate the end-to-end integration across data integration, model building and insight generation, streamline the lifecycle management of AI solutions, and ultimately reduce skills requirements and time to value. Hi everyone, We have a virtual event called OpenDev: Large-scale Usage of Open Infrastructure Software <https://www.openstack.org/events/opendev-2020/> coming up June 29 - July 1, and the event will kick-off with a segment on User Stories Monday at 13:30 UTC. I was wondering if anyone is interested in giving a simple five minute presentation on OpenInfra Labs during that segment. It would be great opportunity to promote what it is and get others interested and involved. The event is discussion based, and we’ll have quite a few research organizations represented as well, so I think OpenInfra Labs would make a great addition to the conversations. Hey Lars, great progress on installing the CNV cluster. As I understand, the next step would involve tearing it down and installing it again, to see if the install playbooks are good. Hi all, We have been discussing open cloud monitoring as part of the weekly meetings and associated with the NERC (New England Research Cloud) Architecture (Gitlab <https://gitlab.com/open-infrastructure-labs/nerc-architecture>). We are looking to develop the user stories and requirements over the next few weeks. Note that the discussion is general and not limited to NERC specifics, any stories or requirements relevant to open source cloud monitoring are fair game. We thought that using an email thread could be beneficial for people provide their input and ideas and to discuss and even work out user stories and requirements. Below are some general roles and areas of monitoring that may be needed. It's only a starter not by any means meant to be complete and immutable. Consider it food for thought and discussion. Cloud owner - Need to monitor cloud usage for accounting, charging - Need to monitor historical usage for planning for future expansion - Needs visibility to issues (problem reports) generated by users - Logging information that may point to emerging hardware issues - Security and compliance information - Revision status of hardware and software Cloud Operators / Administrators and operator tools (such as AIOPs) - Dashboard view of the cloud, showing utilization, workloads, issues - Low level events that will need immediate operator attention (hardware / power failure, platform crashes, network outages) - Alerts generated from ongoing operations via events, metrics and logging - View of current health of cloud hardware (cpu load, memory usage / swapping, errors) - View of performance of various aspects (memory consumption, load averages, swapping, networking, storage) Cloud users - View of their workloads - View of overall cloud health and capacity Hope this helps get the conversation going! cheers, Bill

Proposing a new OILabs sub-project on compute-storage coordination

Hi all, I would like to propose a new sub-project under the OILabs umbrella. The proposed sub-project, dubbed Caerus, will develop techniques to improve the interactions between compute and storage servers. As you may know, there is a trend of compute and storage decoupling, where a compute engine such as Spark, Presto, and Tensorflow is physically separate and far apart from a storage system such as an object store, a file system, or even a database. There are various things that can be done to improve the end-to-end performance, e.g., pushing part of computation to the storage side, and opportunely caching source data, intermediate results or metadata on the compute side. Project Caerus will develop a framework for coordinating between compute and storage servers and for autonomously making optimization decisions such as what part of processing to be pushed down to storage and what content to be cached on the compute server. I believe this project aligns well with OpenInfraLabs' mission of integrating different layers of a cloud stack. Open Infra Labs/Operate Monitoring Architecture Discussion

Initially we planned to do this via IRC but after more thought we decided to start the bell rollign with a zoom call which we wil share publicly with notes. The seeds for the discusssion are in this Epic: https://gitlab.com/open-infrastructure-labs/nerc-architecture/-/issues/4  what are the things desired from a monitoring platform?  what kind of information is expected (is just metrics enough? what other data types do you require?)  what kind of presentation layer is expected? do you just need a dashboard that shows graphs, or do you need more detailed analysis, and what might that look like if you do?  how can the operational knowledge be conveyed? are there a default set of rules that can be provided out of the box as it were? what defines a "healthy cloud"? what defines a cloud that is degraded? what is the remediation path, such as alerting a human, or are there systems that can fix the cloud automatically?  are closed-loop systems different from monitoring? are they different planes? are they similar but have different scopes?  what is the expected resolution of metrics? sub-second? 5 seconds? 30 seconds? minutes? Feel free to add topics you want to be discussed in comments in the Epic. Virtual Project Teams Gathering

I know some of you are already aware of the Project Teams Gathering (PTG) events hosted by the OpenStack Foundation twice yearly. This year, for obvious reasons, we've switched it (at least temporarily) to become a globally-distributed virtual event. I thought the OILabs community had been officially invited to participate, but couldn't find any clear record so thought I would bring it up here. https://www.openstack.org/ptg As it says there, the full schedule will cover Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 5. Being a global event, timeslots are in UTC and available basically around the clock. If OILabs folks have things they think this event would provide them a useful venue for discussing or rallying around, we're welcome to pick some available times in the schedule here (just pick an available "room" for each date and time we would meet and stick something like "OILabs" in the cells): https://ethercalc.openstack.org/126u8ek25noy We ask that the group try to coordinate so that only one person is filling in the reservations, hopefully making it easier to avoid duplication of effort or accidents like signing up for more slots than we'll use. For those who have attended a PTG before, the tools we'll use are basically the same except, being virtual, OSF staff will make a videoconferencing service available to take the place of the physical venue they would normally arrange. For those who haven't attended a PTG before, it's a loosely-coordinated "unconference" style event where the only thing which is really firmly scheduled is when various groups of people plan to be around to talk with one another. We have an IRC channel (#openstack-ptg on Freenode) which acts as both a place for discussing event-related topics like seeking event-specific help, and as a command-and-control channel for our "ptgbot" which teams can use to indicate what topics they're talking about/getting ready to cover. It also has features for booking available rooms on short notice, and for individuals to indicate whether they're floating from one room to another: https://opendev.org/obmpenstack/ptgbot/src/branch/master/README.rst Even if we don't have anything in particular we want to talk about, many of us may still be interested in connecting with other teams/projects/communities or otherwise participating in the event. What operational data and data streams should be gathered?

TL;DR: As we think about making operational data from the Mass Open Cloud <https://massopen.cloud>available to the open source community, we need to define what data and data streams will be useful and gathered. This email is meant to begin a discussion and define that. TS;WM: Some context - the Mass Open Cloud (MOC) is a research cloud formed as a public-private partnership between 5 Research Universities, a group of partner companies, and the state of Massachusetts. The MOC has always had a goal of sharing operational data about the MOC to enable research on cloud computing technologies. As teams working on OI Labs projects began discussing operational data, one question was, “can the MOC share that data to the open source community?” To a great extent, this becomes part of a “Research Compliance” question and may be affected by various grants which have funded the MOC (good news - in almost every grant the PI’s have made clear that data sharing is a goal). As we looked into making such information available, I had a brief discussion with the director of BU’s Research Computing group who helped frame how we should approach this question. The first steps are: 1. Defining what data and data streams will be useful and gathered is the first step 2. Based on that we may identify which populations may be affected 3. Decide on the next steps based on the answers to item 1 and 2 above

Operate First OKRs and Manfisto

While the website https://openinfralabs.org/ is a good first start, it certainly lacks some content. In the spirit of release early and often, how about putting a community version of the operate first manifesto and the OKRs on that same webpage? Is this domain the right place for it? Or should we grab https://instantdomainsearch.com/#search=operatefirst

Prometheus long-term storage

Hey, We're currently evaluating Prometheus at the MOC right now, and one of our open questions is what platform we should be using for providing (a) a global view of multiple Prometheus instances (b) some form of HA (basically, we want to be able to take a prometheus host out of service for maintenance without losing metrics) and (c) long term storage of metrics. I've looked at both Thanos and Victoria Metrics, and from both a design and performance perspective Victoria Metrics seems better...but Thanos seems to have more mindshare among people I've spoken with, and looking online for solid comparisons between the two didn't turn up much except some finger-pointing from developers of both solutions (and I haven't even tried to evaluate other options yet, like Cortex, M3DB, etc). Gitlab group available

Hey folks, We've established a presence on Gitlab at https://gitlab.com/open-infrastructure-labs. There's nothing there at the moment, although we hope to have some folks from Red Hat contributing something Real Soon Now. There is a copy of the openinfralabs.org website repository there, but at the moment this isn't the official source of the site.
